The author is Larry Malerba, DO.

Aside from the obvious fact that modern medicine has devolved into an industry that markets products to medical "consumers," there are a number of more basic problems that must be addressed if the system is ever to be healed. Since those medical products tend to create more sickness than health, it virtually guarantees an endless revolving door of sick consumers in need of more care. The impetus for meaningful medical change must ultimately come from a general public that has become increasingly aware of the dysfunctional nature of health care. The medical system itself cannot be expected to initiate such changes without external pressure from so-called consumers.

Even if we could mitigate the profit motive in medicine, it remains constrained by a number of false assumptions regarding health and healing that must change if it is ever to transcend its limited worldview. But effective change will not be possible unless we first identify some of the shortcomings that prevent Western medicine from attaining a truly holistic perspective. The following broadly constructed categories describe some of the most prominent flaws in Western medical philosophy that, in turn, lead to inappropriate and often dangerous strategies in the actual practice of medicine.

The parts versus the whole

Of necessity, medical science has historically taken a reductionist approach to investigating issues of human health. It breaks the physical body down into its component parts - including a vast universe of microscopic parts that can't be seen by the naked eye - in an attempt to understand the way things work. Much valuable information has been learned in the process. However, when taken as the only approach, the end result is a fragmented array of body parts, bits and pieces of scientific data, and specialized fields of medicine all of which are increasingly dissociated from one another.

As a consequence, each medical event in the history of a patient is seen as discrete and unrelated to all other events in that patient's history. This accounts for the legions of walking wounded who take, for example, one pill for headaches, another for arthritic pain, a third pill for insomnia, and another for depression. The system is in desperate need of a more holistic perspective that can put all of the pieces back together again.

Fortunately, that is precisely what most green healing practitioners are trained to do. Naturopaths, homeopaths, acupuncturists, and many others are busy connecting the dots where conventional medicine has failed to do so. More often than not, most holistic practitioners are generalists that view human health in its totality. They see the big picture that medical science fails to take into account.

Rational analysis versus experience

Modern medicine relies heavily upon the rational faculty of the mind. This is essentially a left-brain trait that places a premium upon a quantitative approach to human health. It places excessive value upon lab results and the statistical abstractions of research studies while it downplays the reality of patient's first-hand experiences. It is the lopsided overly analytical legacy of 2000 plus years of patriarchy. While this may be a useful approach when applied to some of the hard physical sciences such as geology or mechanical engineering, it is woefully inadequate when it is the dominant or exclusive approach to healing.

This predominantly rational worldview is a breeding ground for a mentality that, for example, can so casually excuse "X" number of deaths caused by drug "A" as the necessary "risks that come with the benefits." Such a mindset allows medical professionals to actually believe their own rhetoric when they proclaim that it does not constitute "conclusive evidence" when a parent reports that their normal child decompensated into an autistic state within days after having been vaccinated. It amounts to an eggheaded form of logic that has no grounding in the reality of patients and their actual problems.

It is the same mindset that dismisses a patient's report of his or her own symptoms and experiences as "merely anecdotal." Objectivity is worshipped while subjectivity has become a bad word - as if to say that one's own self-assessment is inferior to what the medical literature and lab numbers tell us. This is why patients frequently come away from a visit to the doctor feeling unseen and unheard. This overvaluation of rational thinking results in what can most accurately be called rationalizations - like the ones described above.

Another erroneous rationalization is that one size should fit all. The very foundation of most medical research, therefore, is grounded in the notion that it is possible to develop a synthetic drug that can be applied across the board to many people with the same condition. This tendency to generalize runs contrary to a holistic understanding of the need to individualize treatment for each and every person. All cases of arthritis, so the logic goes, are considered the same and should respond to the same drug. This fails, however, to take into account the experiential reality that each and every case of illness is unique and while some will respond to one particular therapy, others will respond best to a different approach, and still others will benefit from another.

Real and lasting healing must also make use of the right brain. Many green healing methods value a more direct, empirical, experiential orientation to the patient. It is a qualitative approach that also involves intangibles like intuition, feeling, meaning and subjective assessment. These tools form the missing complement to the analytical mode of scientific medicine. This is not just a call for doctors to be more compassionate. It is a practical matter that often has a very real impact upon patient outcomes.

Mechanism versus bioenergetics

Western medicine's mechanistic bias is another of its notable shortcomings. The human body tends to be seen as an automobile that periodically needs its parts repaired, removed or replaced. This mechanical bias predisposes medical scientists to believe that technological solutions are superior to the innate and natural healing power of Mother Nature. Mechanistic thinking is closely allied with the cause-and-effect mode of perception that tends to dominate conventional medical thought.

When a person taking a pharmaceutical prescription for migraines subsequently develops an arthritic knee, the two phenomena are considered to be unrelated because there is no anatomical or logical connection between the two - according to the conventional medical worldview. Events, therefore, must have a clear and logically explainable connection in order to be taken seriously. "Coincidences" are easily dismissed as such because they cannot be assigned any logical reason for their existence. A greener perspective, on the other hand, takes it as a given that the migraines and knee pain are almost always related.

A mechanistic view holds that our thoughts and emotions are by-products of the physical brain with its neurons, synapses, and neurotransmitters. A more enlightened bioenergetic model views the human body, brain and nervous system as the most complex receiver, transducer, and transmitter of energies in the known universe. Many green healing practices are grounded in the notion of the universe as a vast interconnected sea of particle-waves and energy fields. Just because the physical senses can only detect a narrow spectrum of visible light and a small band of sound waves does not mean that the comparatively vast remainder of energies along the electromagnetic spectrum do not have an impact upon human health and behavior. A variety of known and unknown energetic influences are continuously affecting the health of individuals, groups, societies and the ecosystem. Such a vast unexplored field of "invisible" energetic interconnections constitutes a potential goldmine that stands ready for serious scientific inquiry.

Materialism versus non-physical reality

Perhaps the most problematic aspect of Western medicine is its inability to come to terms with issues of non-physical reality. It tries to force the multidimensional nature of human health experiences into a strictly materialistic framework. Those who subscribe to this worldview "believe" that the physical is the only reality of relevance, or that even exists. The related illusion that science is an amoral endeavor is a serious error in judgment that has far-reaching practical implications for health care. Medicine is so uncomfortable with the non-physical dimension that it artificially excludes it from the medical equation with the justification that it is unscientific and unworthy of investigation - yet another unfounded rationalization.

Most green therapeutic modalities accept the energetic, psychic, and spiritual dimensions of human existence as fundamental realities. They do not dismiss them because they cannot be measured by scientific instruments or verified by rationalist standards of proof. One cannot dissociate one's personal spiritual principles from one's quest for health and healing and, at the same time, expect beneficial and lasting results. The spiritual dimension is an experientially confirmed reality "known" by millions, and "believed" to be the case by many millions more. This constitutes a form of knowing very different from, but equally valuable to, a rationally constructed logic of knowing. My personal spiritual experience is something that I may "know," or it may be something that I "believe," but it can never be proven to the scientific skeptic. This does not render it unimportant to issues of health and healing. In fact, it is a vital component without which genuine healing often falls short.

Suppression versus healing

When we indiscriminately combat symptoms we run the risk of suppression. The body in its wisdom often causes a symptom to recur in spite of our attempts to eradicate it. Each dose of migraine medication, for instance, dulls the pain temporarily until the next one occurs. However, when the migraines fail to recur, that is when we may be in for trouble. There is no free medical lunch. When a symptom or condition is successfully squelched, the bioenergetic source of the original disturbance simply seeks the next best avenue for expression. Thus, the migraines may "mutate," for example, into fatigue, arthritis or colitis. Furthermore, the consequences of such inappropriate treatment are not limited to physical maladies. The same migraines can just as easily mutate into insomnia, depression, or an anxiety disorder. This is not mere speculation; it is a phenomenon repeatedly observed by thousands of green healing practitioners. The possibilities are endless and depend upon each individual case.

And when symptoms do mutate, regular medicine usually fails to connect the dots. Medicine pursues its ill-advised strategy of symptom suppression largely without realizing what it is doing. The sequelae of suppression are just considered random occurrences that have no connection to the previous history of the patient. When we consider that almost all conventional medical treatments are essentially suppressive, the implications are staggering. Thus, an endless cycle of chronic disease is generated. It is no coincidence, and no wonder then, that we are seeing such dramatic rises in the incidence of many chronic diseases, autoimmune disorders, and psychiatric illness.

Treatment focused on symptoms has no larger purpose or conscious goal that leads toward greater health. This strategy is emblematic of a war against disease mentality that views symptoms as the enemy rather than as the manifestations of the body's innate healing mechanism. Green healing is not congruent with such a misreading of the nature and intent of symptoms. True healing recognizes the self-healing capacity of the bioenergetic life force and seeks to work with it rather than against it. Green medicine takes into account the whole person and the connections between symptoms even when they occur in seemingly unrelated parts of the body and even when they are separated by time. Real healing leads to greater health, vitality, maturity and self-awareness.

Conclusions

Each of the aforementioned opposing viewpoints does not have to be at odds with each other. An appreciation for the whole is complementary to an understanding of the parts. Empirical observation and rational analysis are most effective when they work together hand in hand. A thorough knowledge of mechanics is necessary to set a bone, plug a leaky vessel, and remove a diseased appendix, just as an understanding of human bioenergetics can lead to the resolution of chronic disease. It should go without saying that body, heart, mind, and soul are inextricable aspects of the one whole. And even suppression may come in handy in a pinch when faced with life-threatening illness. Once things are stabilized, more enduring methods of genuine healing can then be employed. Real green healing utilizes the best of all medical worlds.

Recommended reading

B. type='text'>Top Ten Lies About Senate Bill 510

by Mike Adams, NaturalNews

The Food Safety Modernization Act looks like it's headed to become law. It's being hailed as a "breakthrough" achievement in food safety, and it would hand vast new powers and funding to the FDA so that it can clean up the food supply and protect all Americans from food-borne pathogens.

There's just one problem with all this: It's all a big lie.

Here are the ten biggest lies that have been promoted about S.510 by the U.S. Congress, the food industry giants and the mainstream media:

Lie #1 - Most deaths from food poisoning are caused by fresh produce
Here's a whopper the mainstream media won't dare report: Out of the 1,809 people who die in America every year from food-borne pathogens (CDC estimate), only a fraction die from the manufacturer's contamination of fresh produce. By far the majority of food poisoning is caused by the consumption of spoiled processed foods, dead foods and animal-human transmission of pathogens.

For example, one of the largest food-borne killers according to the CDC is Toxoplasma gondii, a disease that people acquire from cat feces coming into contact with their food, which can happen right in their own homes (http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/eid/Vol5n...). Salmonella poisoning accounts for 553 deaths a year. As a reference for relative risk, over 42,000 people die each year from road accidents in the USA, meaning driving a car has a roughly7600% higher chance of killing you than eating fresh produce. (http://www.driveandstayalive.com/in...)

In terms of food-borne illness, many of the deaths come from things like spoiled tomato sauce, spoiled canned foods and spoiled pasteurized milk. S 510, of course, does absolutely nothing to address these food contamination deaths, since those foods are considered "sterilized" at the time of sale.

Lie #2 - Under S.510, the FDA would only recall products it knows to be contaminated
Not true. S.510 merely requires the FDAto have "reason to believe" a food is contaminated. So right there, that means all raw milk will be targeted by the FDA because even without conducting any scientific tests at all, the FDA can say it has "reason to believe" the milk is contaminated merely because it is raw.

In other words, the FDA no longer needs science to outlaw a food product. It merely needs an opinion.

Is this "reason to believe" section really true? Yep, and here's how it was amended:

SEC. 208. ADMINISTRATIVE DETENTION OF FOOD.
23 (a) IN GENERAL. - Section 304(h)(1)(A) (21 U.S.C.24 334(h)(1)(A)) is amended by
(1) striking ''credible evidence or information indicating'' and inserting ''reason to believe'';

In other words, in negotiating this bill, the U.S. Senate removed the requirement that the FDA needed "credible evidence" in order to recall a product and, instead, replaced that with the FDA only needing "reason to believe."

It is utterly amazing that the U.S.Congress would give the FDA to conduct large-scale product recalls and even imprison people based entirely on what the agency "has reason to believe."

Last time I checked, the FDA held some pretty bizarre (if not downright moronic) beliefs, including this jaw-dropping whopper: The FDA literally believes that there is no food, no herb, no vitamin or supplement that has any ability to prevent disease of any kind. They don't even believe limes can prevent scurvy, and you'd have to nutritionally illiterate to believe that.

The FDA believes foods are inert and that all the amazing phytonutrients in those foods (carotenoids, antioxidants, therapeutic fats like omega-3 and so on) are utterly useless for human biology.

This belief, held by the FDA that has now been put in charge of the food supply, is the belief system of an insane government agency that has completely lost touch with reality while abandoning nutritional science.

Lie #3 - They didn't tell you that nearly 70% of grocery store chickens are contaminated with salmonella every day
Yep, it's true: Amid all the fear-mongering over salmonella, everybody forgot to notice that the vast majority of fresh chickens sold at grocery stores every single day are widely contaminated with salmonella (http://www.naturalnews.com/028661_c...). Yet S 510 does absolutely nothing to address this. It's not even mentioned in the bill.

In fact, it is these contaminated chickens that end up cross-contaminating the fresh produce in many kitchens across America. So the so-called "food poisoning" that's often blamed on spinach or onions often originates with the contaminated chicken meat people bring home and slice on their kitchen cutting boards.

Lie #4 - S.510 will exclude and protect small farmers
The Tester Amendment, which was finally included in S.510, excludes farmers who sell less than $500,000 worth of food each year from the more onerous paperwork and compliance burdens described in the bill. But this dollar amount is not indexed to inflation, meaning that as the U.S. dollar continues to lose value due to the Federal Reserve counterfeiting machine running at full speed (more "quantitative easing," anyone?), food prices will continue to skyrocket -- and this will shift even small family farms into the $500,000 sales range within just a few years.

In fact, a single-family farm with just four people could easily sell $500,000 worth of fresh produce a year right now, even before inflation. Remember, $500,000 is not their profit, but rather the gross sales amount. The profits on that might be only $50,000 or even less.

Furthermore, this $500,000 threshold means that small, successful farms that are doing well and would like to expand will refuse to hire more people or expand their operations. To avoid the tyranny of S 510, small farms will try to stay small, and that means avoiding the kind of business expansion that would create new jobs.

Lie #5 - The FDA needs more power to enforce food safety
The FDA already has the power to effectively recall foods by publicly announcing a product has been found to be contaminated. The FDA already has the power to confiscate "misbranded" products, too, and it could easily use this power to halt the sale of contaminated food items.

But the FDA simply refuses to enforce the laws already on the books and, instead, has sought to expand its power by hyping up the e.coli food scares. The ploy apparently worked: Now in a reaction to the food scare-mongering, the FDA is being handed not just new powers, but more funding, too! And you can bet it will find creative new ways to put this power to work suppressing the health freedoms and food freedoms of the American people.

Lie #6 - Fresh produce is contaminated because of a lack of paperwork
There is no evidence that requiring farms to fill out more paperwork will make their food safer. The real cause of produce contamination is the existence of factory animal farms whose effluent output (huge rivers of cow feces, basically), end up in the water supply, soils and equipment that comes into contact with fresh produce.

The food contamination problem is an UPSTREAM problem where you've got to reform the factory animal operations that now dominate the American meat industry. S.510, however, does absolutely nothing to address this. Factory animal farms aren't even addressed in the bill!

Lie #7 - The American people are dying in droves from unsafe fresh food
The truth is that Americans are dying from processed food laced with toxic chemical additives, not from fresh, raw produce. Partially-hydrogenated oils, white sugar, aspartame, MSG and artificial food colors almost certainly kill far more people than bacterial contaminations.

The American public is also dying from pharmaceuticals -- anywhere from 100,000 to 240,000 people a year are killed by FDA-approved drugs (http://www.naturalnews.com/001894.html), most of which have been approved under the guise of blatantly fraudulent science and drug company trickery. The FDA doesn't seem to mind. In fact, it has been a willful co-conspirator in the scientific fraud carried out by Big Pharma in the name of "medicine." (http://www.naturalnews.com/027851_h...)

To think that the FDA -- the very same agency responsible for the Big Pharma death machine -- is now going to "save us" by controlling food safety is highly irrational.

Lie #8 - The FDA just wants to make food "safer"
Actually, the FDA wants to make the food more DEAD. Both the FDA and the USDA are vocal opponents of live food. They think that the only safe food is sterilized food, which is why they've supported the fumigation, pasteurization and irradiation efforts that have been pushed over the last few years.

California almond growers, for example, must now either chemically fumigate or pasteurize their almonds before selling them (http://www.naturalnews.com/021776.html). This has destroyed the incomes of U.S. almond farmers and forced U.S. food companies to buy raw almonds from Spain and other countries.

Lie #9 - Food smuggling is a huge problem in America
One of the main sections of S.510 addresses "food smuggling." Yep -- people smuggling food across the country. If you've never heard of this problem that's because it's not actually a problem.

Not yet anyway.

But there's a reason why they put this into the bill: Because they're probably planning on criminalizing fresh produce and then arresting people for transporting broccoli with the "intent to distribute."

Yep, farmers bringing fresh produce to sell at the weekend farmer's market could soon be arrested and imprisoned as if they were drug smugglers. Hence the need for the "food smuggling" provisions of S.510.

Soon, we will all have to meet in secret locations just to trade carrots for cash.

Lie #10 - S.510 will make America's food supply the safest in the world

Actually, even with S.510 in place, America's food supply is among the most chemically contaminated in the world, second only to China. You can find mercury in the seafood, BPA in the canned soup, yeast extract (MSG) in the "natural" potato chips, and artificial petrochemical coloring agents in children's foods.

Eating the "Standard American Diet" is probably the single most harmful thing a person can do for their health. It's the fastest way to get cancer, diabetes and heart disease. Every nation in the world that begins to consume the American diet starts to show record rates of degenerative disease within one generation. This is the "safe food" that the U.S. Senate is now pushing on everyone.

Remember, with S.510, SAFE = DEAD. The quality of the food determines the quality of the energy you have -- and how much.

But as cells burn energy, they also burn oxygen (supplied through the blood). This results in atoms, molecules and fragments of molecules that we call "free radicals." A free radical has only one electron. It wants two. The "free" part of the term indicates that these fragments roam throughout the body looking to scrounge an electron from somewhere. In the process, they can do great damage. For instance, when a free radical takes an electron from an otherwise healthy cell, then that cell is turned into a free radical -- also now on a mission. The longer this process goes on, the quicker you will appear to age, and the greater your chances of producing within your body heart disease, cancer, dementia, and a number of other diseases and conditions that you no doubt do not want. Quite simply, your body becomes oxidated -- just like rusted metal.

But by a great stroke of luck, we find that Nature has provided us with hundreds of sources of what we will call "anti-oxidants." All different kinds; all different colors; all different strengths; all effective in halting the scourge of free radicals, naturally.

In this post, we'll introduce you to the antioxidants that can help you prevent or overcome autoimmune conditions such as diabetes, HIV, rheumatoid arthritis, Parkinson's, cancer, and even Guillain-Barre Syndrome.* Those antioxidants are glutathione, methionine, and selenium.

Glutathione

Glutathione is a type of protein. It is produced in the liver from the amino acids cysteine, glutamic acid, and glycine. It is the principle water-soluble antioxidant and is essential for maintaining a healthy immune system. Glutathione is so powerful because it targets and eliminates hydroxl radicals -- believed to be the most damaging type of free radical -- within the cells.

Anyone who is experiencing cancer, diabetes, or HIV must maintain adequate levels of glutathione because it 1) detoxifies heavy metals and toxins, and 2) is used to treat liver diseases. In fact, it has been recognized as a cancer-preventing substance. Glutathione also protects the arteries and the tissues of the brain, eyes, heart, immune system, liver, and skin.

While autoimmune disorders have long been considered a medical mystery -- "autoimmune" means that the immune system fails to distinguish between foreign invaders and its own body and attacks indiscriminately -- researchers have discovered that all autoimmune diseases flourish in the absence of glutathione. Therefore, it is important to get as many sources of this enzyme into your body as you can. This is not difficult to do. Simply include these foods in your weekly diet: cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, and kale; apples, carrots, grapefruit, spinach, asparagus, avocados and purslane.

Of course, it's always best to eat these plants raw, since the heat of cooking destroys much of the glutathione in both fruits and vegetables. In addition, adding milk thistle (an herb) to your daily intake of foods will help your liver better perform its function of detoxification.

Methionine

Methionine is an amino acid. Rich in sulfur, it is found in meat, dairy products, fish, eggs, beans, Brazil nuts, garlic, lentils, onions, yogurt, and seeds.

Methionine, like glutathione, neutralizes hydroxyl radicals. It can help to prevent hair, skin, and nail disorders; to counteract fatty liver disease; to lower cholesterol; to protect the kidneys; to detoxify the body of heavy metals; to prevent bladder irritation; and to promote hair growth. Anyone experiencing HIV, Parkinson's, liver problems, or pancreatitis must keep an adequate supply in their bodies through live foods at all times. Methionine has also been shown to be helpful for people who have been diagnosed with schizophrenia and for women taking birth control.

Selenium

Selenium is a trace mineral. The body uses it to produce glutathione peroxidase, which is a powerful antioxidant enzyme. All of the body's tissue store and use selenium, but particularly the liver, kidneys, spleen, pancreas, and testes.

Selenium works together with vitamin E to protect tissues and cell membranes, to help the immune system produce antibodies, and to help maintain a healthy heart and liver. Some studies have linked it to a lower incidence of cancer, while others have suggested that when combined with zinc and vitamin E, selenium can help keep the prostate healthy.

You can obtain selenium through seafood, liver, garlic, onions and leeks, asparagus, broccoli, kelp, wheat germ, brown rice, Brazil nuts, brewer's yeast, and grains.

The quantity of selenium in vegetables is directly related to selenium levels in the soil in which the vegetables were grown. In the U.S., the highest levels of soil selenium are found in the high plains of Nebraska and the Dakotas. Most American farmland is deficient in selenium, so you might want to consider obtaining it in the form of a supplement. In this case, the recommended dose is 200 micrograms a day.

* This statement has not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration.

For instance, when a free radical steals an electron from an otherwise healthy cell, then that cell is turned into a free radical -- also now on a mission.

In this post, we'll introduce you to the classic antioxidants: vitamins C, E, and P, an enzyme known as SOD, and zinc.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a nutrient. It is found in good quantities in asparagus, avocados, berries, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cantaloupe, most citrus fruits (especially grapefruit, lemons, mangoes, papayas, oranges, and pineapples), collard greens, dandelion greens, kale, onions, potatoes, turnips, spinach, watercress, guava, and black currants.

When you want vitamin C from vegetables, it's best to eat them raw because steaming reduces the amount of vitamin C available from the plant. Also, leaving fresh vegetables out in the light or air for more than a few hours will have the same effect. The fresher, the better!

Most people choose to get their vitamin C as a tablet or powder supplement. Just know that the vitamin is much more bioavailable -- meaning your body can make better use of it -- when it comes from food (hence the handy list above). Vitamin C is water-soluble, so it dissolves easily in the body and works synergistically with other antioxidants in keeping their potency and aiding in their absorption.

A diet high in vitamin C has proven to reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer. It is also thought to be beneficial toward osteoarthritis in two ways: first, by forming collagen and proteoglycans in cartilage, and second by scavenging free radicals that damage cartilage. For the same reasons, vitamin C can also relieve rheumatoid arthritis.

No one can possibly argue against the claim that vitamin C has anti-cancer properties, since the chemical Interferon, used in chemotherapy, is a horrendously harsh and amateurish replica of a substance copied from vitamin C. It is particularly useful against tumors, which typically produce large amounts of free radicals and require both an acidic and an oxygenated environment in which to grow. Antioxidants prevent the internal environment from being friendly to cancerous tumors.

A note to smokers: Smoking is known to seriously deplete vitamin C, but then so will alcohol, analgesics, antidepressants, anticoagulants, oral contraceptives, and steroids. If any of these apply to you, consider supplementing with 2,000 to 4.000 mg of vitamin C daily.

Vitamin E

It is generally accepted that vitamin E (aka alpha-tocopherol) can reduce the risk of heart disease and offer a measure of protection against cancer, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. In fact, it can improve immune function overall. Recent data have suggested a definite potential benefit of vitamin E for people considered to be at high risk for cardiac problems. For men, vitamin E, together with selenium, offers good protection against prostate cancer and reduces the risk of a fatal first heart attack. As an antioxidant, it protects fats, cell membranes, DNA and enzymes against damage.

Foods rich in vitamin E are legumes, nuts (especially almonds and hazelnuts), spinach and other dark-green leafy vegetables, asparagus, corn, sunflower seeds, sweet potatoes, wheat germ, and whole grains.

Vitamin P

Vitamin P is the name now given generally to flavonoids. It includes tannins, curcuminoids, flavones, and flavonols. Flavonoids are a class of antioxidants that enhance the immune system and inhibit enzymes responsible for metastasis (the spread of cancer cells throughout the body). Vitamin P prevents cancer-promoting hormones from attaching to normal cells and guards against blood clots. It helps to lower the risk of estrogen-related cancers, such as breast cancer, by blocking the enzymes that make estrogen. It also protects against heart disease and stroke, regulates the enzymes that control cell division, modifies allergic reactions, reduces capillary fragility, and enhances the function of vitamin C in the body.

Vitamin P is found in many foods, including apples, apricots, bilberry, black currants, cherries, citrus fruits, grapes, red wine, tomatoes, cranberries, blueberries, green and black tea, chamomile tea, rice, buckwheat, green pepper, onions, flaxseed, lentils, ginkgo, hawthorn, milk thistle, rose hips, and yarrow. That's a lot of choices, so start getting it into your daily diet now!

Superoxide Dismutase

Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is an enzyme that neutralizes superoxide radicals, which are among the most harmful of all free radicals. It also reduces the rate of cell destruction. Working together with catalase, another enzyme found in abundance in the body, SOD destroys harmful hydrogen peroxide, reduces high blood pressure, and helps to prevent cataracts. SOD helps the body to process zinc, copper, and manganese. You can find it in barley grass, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, wheatgrass, and most green plants, which are all rich in this enzyme.

Zinc

Zinc is a mineral that is used by cells to divide and grow and by the immune system to help heal wounds and regulate itself. As an antioxidant, it is most helpful in preventing fat oxidation. It also helps to regulate levels of vitamin E in the blood and aids in the absorption of vitamin A (from beta-carotene, which you'll find in another post). Zinc is particularly important to the reproductive organs, is essential to prostate function, and boosts testosterone levels. These three properties alone make it invaluable to men.

Dietary sources of zinc include seafood (especially sardines); raw milk; free-range, organic poultry; eggs; mushrooms; sunflower seeds; pumpkin seeds; and wheat germ.

Medical Disclaimer: The information on this website is not intended to replace a one-on-one relationship with a qualified, licensed health care professional and is not intended as medical advice. Nutrition trumps cosmetics every time. But what kind of nutrition?

The top five superfoods and health supplements for the "anti-aging" crowd -- and the rest of us -- are all readily available, natural, and completely effective, with no negative side effects of any kind. It's a deep-red microalgae that's a fat-soluble antioxidant. That means it can be delivered to the fat molecules of your body, and that includes your skin, of course, which is primarily made of fat and water (by weight). Astaxanthin is a kick-ass nutrient. Aside from protecting your skin from sunburn, thus eliminating the need to use toxic sunscreen lotions, astaxanthin protects the brain from Alzheimer's disease, the eyes from UV light damage and the entire nervous system from oxidative damage. The best way to take astaxanthin is with a dietary source of healthy fats (see below). As a fat-soluable antioxidant, astaxanthin binds to fats during digestion and is delivered to the entire body, where it does its job of scrounging free radicals that cause premature aging and overall system damage.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3s are a necessary part of any healthy diet. The best omega-3s are those derived from marine life, particularly Antarctic krill. By the way, the best way to take astaxanthin is with high-quality omega-3 oils. Ocean-derived omega-3s support the body's healthy response to inflammation naturally. Whereas most doctors will prescribe a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), all anyone ever needs is sufficient omega-3s in their diet. Consider that omega-3s, being naturally-derived, are good for the entire body, whereas NSAIDs can lead to gastrointestinal bleeding, liver and kidney damage, greatly elevated risk of stroke or heart attack, and even death.*

Which would you prefer?

Additionally, ocean-derived omega-3 oils not only support healthy skin, they also support and enhance the health of the nervous system, cardiovascular system, respiratory system and many other functions of the human body, including moods and balanced brain function.

Raw foods and fresh juice

Freshly juiced organic vegetables are one of the best possible foods for your body, including your skin. In fact, people who juice regularly just look healthier -- and they are! It's no surprise that live foods support living, vibrant skin. Dead foods cause skin to age rapidly, and eating fried foods or animal products can cause any number of diseases or discomforts for your skin, including acne, eczema or various rashes. Including raw vegetable juice in your daily diet is one of the best ways to stay looking and feeling younger and healthier. Start today, and you'll notice a difference within a month.

Pumpkin Seeds, Shellfish, and Zinc

Zinc is essential for skin repair and injury repair, as well as being good for prostate health. Zinc deficiency can cause unhealthy skin because zinc allows skin cells (and other cells) to stay strong and resist attack. It also helps increase the rate of healthy cell reproduction, which helps minor wounds to heal faster. Both pumpkin seeds and shellfish are good sources of zinc. You can also find it as a supplement, often combined with calcium and magnesium.

While you're considering supplements, also consider including MSM (sulfur), which your cells will be happy to incorporate. MSM is important to have in sufficient quantities, and your skin will thank you for supplying it.

Good Clean Water

Few people really understand the intricacies of this issue. Believe it or not, good clean water can now officially be considered a supplement-able nutrient, since most of the water available to us today is woefully deficient in one way or another. Good water is not only necessary to keep your entire body -- including your skin -- well hydrated, it's also necessary to help overcome inadequate absorption of nutrients brought about by a diet consisting of artificial substances, toxic chemicals, and cumulative oxidative damage. For these reasons, most people are chronically dehydrated, and it shows most apparently in their skin. Just keep in mind that wrinkles are not a natural part of aging. You thought they were, didn't you?

Natural spring water is the best, if you can get it. Bottled water is not a good substitute, and it creates a nightmare of waste for our landfills. If you don't live close enough to a natural spring to get your water from there, the next best option is to purchase a quality filtration system, such as Aquasana.

Good Nutrition is the Key

The best way to take good care of your skin is to take good care of your entire body -- all at once. The best way to do that is to make sure you're getting good nutrition. Avoid sugars, simple carbohydrates (like anything white in color), fried foods, and everything artificial. People the world over are literally dying from these plagues on humanity. We're even killing our pets by feeding them our food. Dogs are cats are dying of cancer or contracting autoimmune disorders like rheumatoid arthritis or even going down with osteoporosis (which is completely reversible in pets or in humans). What we're doing with food is crazy. Literally.

The solution is blindingly simple. Eat natural foods. And for the best-looking, healthiest skin, just make sure you're getting quality omega-3s (Antarctic krill -- really), drinking freshly juiced vegetables and good water, taking your supplements, and including astaxanthin in your diet. Switching to a good quality salt -- like Himalayan pink salt or Celtic sea salt -- will do wonders for you as well.

What else can you do? Easy. Limit your intake of meats (except fish); limit your intake of dairy products, especially milk; don't eat anything that's been fried, including almost all fast foods; cut way back on any kind of food that comes in a package with a label on it; and always look for a natural alternative to pharmaceutical medications, which are nearly all poison. Eat fresh, natural foods and enjoy a fresh, natural body. Simple, eh?

* This statement has not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. Common examples are diet sodas and other diet drinks, most products labeled "sugar-free" or "diet" or even "light", and of course the packaged products NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, and Splenda.

Aspartame was approved decades ago by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), despite clear evidence in animal trials that it caused aggressive brain tumors. Its approval was one of the first warning signs that the FDA -- instituted to be a watchdog for the People -- was in truth far more interested in protecting corporate profits than in protecting Americans from harmful foods and drugs.

In the time since its approval about 30 years ago, on-going research into this chemical artificial sweetener has found that aspartame has a shocking number of short- and long-term adverse effects, including:

<li class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; Actually, the manufacturer knew prior to the product's approval. G.D. Searle aggressively pushed for FDA approval, knowing that their product was definitely not safe for human consumption. But the market for an artificial sweetener was there, and Searle was ready to jump in. Naturally, they made a killing. (Ouch; bad pun.) Searle was purchased in 1985 by Monsanto, now the world's largest producer of genetically-modified seeds. This makes Monsanto perhaps one of the leading multi-national corporations in terms of crimes against humanity.

Aspartame can also mimic the symptoms of, or worsen the condition of, the following dis-eases:

Fibromyalgia Syndrome

arthritis

Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

Parkinson's disease

lupus

multiple chemical sensitivities (MCS)

diabetes and diabetic complications

epilepsy

Alzheimer's disease

birth defects

Although information about the multiple dangers of aspartame is widely and easily available, a thorough and reputable source can be found in Dr. Joseph Mercola. You can start by reading this.

Millions of people drink soda because it's ubiquitous and cheap. In fact, it's usually cheaper than water alone -- which should tell us something. But, as bad as soda is for the body -- and it is very bad, indeed -- diet soda with aspartame cannot possibly be worth the risk of drinking, even if it does have fewer calories. Really? Fewer calories? Can that be a good enough reason to risk the demonstrated side effects of long-term consumption of aspartame? And remember, it's not just in soda. It's everywhere. Most people are getting it from multiple sources every day.

And then there's the American health care crisis...

Think about it.

Medical Disclaimer: The information on this website is not intended to replace a one-on-one relationship with a qualified, licensed health care professional and is not intended as medical advice. It is relatively benign, although too much consumed daily can lead to bone or dental problems. In cases of fluoride poisoning, calcium is used as an antidote. This would seem to indicate that the calcium in naturally-occurring calcium fluoride neutralizes much of fluoride's toxic effects.

On the other hand, the type of fluorides added to municipal water supplies and other beverages and foods in America are waste products of the phosphate (fertilizer), nuclear, and aluminum processing industries. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has classified the following as toxins: fluorosilicate acid, sodium silicofluoride, and sodium fluoride.

Sodium fluoride is used for rat poison and as a pesticide. According to a scientific study done several years ago -- Comparative Toxicity of Fluorine Compounds -- industrial waste sodium fluorides are 85 times more toxic than naturally-occurring calcium fluoride. As a check, take a moment to go look at your toothpaste. According to the labeling, what kind of fluoride does it contain?

Sodium Fluoride is Poison

Most fluoride entering the body is not easily eliminated. It has a tendency to accumulate in your bones and teeth. Recently, it has been discovered to accumulate even more in the pineal gland, located in the middle of the brain.

Dental fluorosis, which seriously harms teeth, occurs as a consequence of daily fluoridation. This has been well-documented. Yet, the American Dental Association (ADA) continues to promote the inclusion of sodium fluoride (which it refers to simply as "fluoride", to deliberately confuse consumers) in toothpastes. They steadfastly refuse to admit that instead of preventing tooth decay, sodium fluoride causes even more dental harm. No wonder 4 out of 5 dentists recommend it!

The flood of sodium fluoride in water and food also creates other more serious health problems that are not widely publicized, even suppressed. Nevertheless, in addition to fluorosis, independent labs and reputable researchers have linked the following health issues with daily long-term intake of sodium fluoride:

According to investigative journalist Christopher Bryson, author of The Fluoride Deception, getting large quantities of sodium fluoride into the water and food system was a ploy of public relations sponsored by the industries who were saddled with getting rid of toxic materials that result from certain industrial processes.

Fluoride was necessary for the processing or enriching of uranium. The pro-fluoride propaganda was started during the Manhattan Project, which produced the first atom bombs in the 1940s. Initially, the idea was to convince workers and locals where the largest nuclear plant was located in Tennessee that fluoride was not only safe, but it was also good for kids' dental health. They didn't mention that they weren't talking about calcium fluoride, but rather the highly toxic sodium fluoride.

Then, in the early 1950s, Edward Bernays, the notorious spin master and father of advertising, continued the campaign for adding fluorides to water supplies as an experiment in engineering human consent! Then the ADA picked up on the dental issue and endorsed sodium fluoride's addition to municipal water supplies. This essentially amounted to "medicating" entire populations without their consent, and with an untested and unapproved substance. Current information from dissenting health studies and reports were squashed by the media at the time. Beware anything in politics that is "for the children". Researchers who attempted to argue in the public's best interests were dismissed as quacks regardless of their credentials.

Today, some 60 to 70 percent of American water supplies are laced with sodium fluoride, a common pesticide. Its residue is in foods, sodas, bottled waters, packaged fruit juices, and even infant formulas (which can also contain as much as 50% sugar), as well as most toothpastes that Americans use every day. Read your food labels carefully!

Why is all this permitted? It's not legal pretty much anywhere in the world to dispose of sodium fluoride (and other toxic fluoride formulations) because it's so highly toxic. Consequently, industries that produce it must pay up to $4.50 per gallon to treat it before it can be disposed of properly. On the other hand, they can sell it to municipalities for around $1.30 per gallon, which means they're making money instead of losing it. The municipalities then dump the fluoride into the public water supply for good of the People. And now everybody's happy! (Please refer to the above-listed side effects of toxic fluorosis.)

Can I Avoid Fluoridation?

Not really. Keep in mind that boiling only increases the concentration of fluoride to water more. Think about this the next time you draw water from your kitchen faucet for cooking,or for making coffee or tea. Furthermore, most common water filtration systems (like Brita or Pur), do not remove sodium fluoride from tap water. Reverse osmosis filtration will do the trick, but it also leaves water inert and unhealthy. Filtered well water or natural spring water are really the only good choices left. Collected rain water is a possibility, but -- believe it or not -- several states actually have laws prohibiting this practice.

It might be worth mentioning that the United States is virtually the only country in the world that has actually mandated by law that its public water supplies be laced with sodium fluoride. Therefore, it stands to reason that you could move to nearly any other country in the world and have access to much better water than we have here. Think about it.

Medical Disclaimer: The information on this website is not intended to replace a one-on-one relationship with a qualified, licensed health care professional and is not intended as medical advice. Natural foods can fix it.

Over 23 million American have been diagnosed with type-2 diabetes, and another six million are suspected to have the condition but are not yet diagnosed. Recent estimates place that figure at 75% (3 out of 4 Americans) by 2020. Yet type-2 diabetes is 100% preventable because it is entirely diet-related. Because poor nutrition creates type-2 diabetes, it makes sense that diet and proper nutrition play an important role in the prevention and treatment of diabetes. Eating healthy foods in the proper balanced amounts will lower blood sugar and manage the symptoms of this "disease". Balancing carbohydrates, eliminating sugars, and adding protein will help stabilize blood glucose.

Carbohydrates and Sugar in a Diabetic Diet

If you are diabetic, then you need to be watchful for "good" carbs and "bad" carbs. The good carbs are the ones that contain complex carbohydrates and burn slower. They help to stabilize blood glucose. The bad carbs are the simple carbohydrates and are derived from sugar, refined white flour, "corn sugar" (aka High Fructose Corn Syrup), and juices made from concentrates. Simple carbs cause insulin to spike in the blood and should be avoided. Because fresh fruits contain dozens of valuable nutrients in addition to sugars, they can be included in a diabetic diet in small amounts. However, fruit juices are best avoided because the fructose (natural sugar) is in unnaturally high proportion to the liquid when made from reconstituted concentrates. To add fruit juice to the diet without spiking insulin levels, juice can be diluted at least 50/50, so that the benefits of the fruit can be enjoyed without adding excessive sugar to the bloodstream. Obviously, the same goes for the convenient individual-size boxed juices that are marketed to kids and busy moms and are doing their part to turn our young ones into the unhealthiest generation this planet has ever seen.

Beans

Beans contain carbohydrates along with as much protein as an ounce of meat. Beans also contain magnesium and fiber. At least one cup a day is recommended. Darker-colored beans will also benefit the liver, kidneys, gallbladder and adrenals.

Fiber

Fiber is necessary for everyone, but especially for those with diabetes because it lowers blood sugar. Fiber has been shown to prevent the onset of diabetes and it can also lower LDL cholesterol levels. But then blood-sugar levels and cholesterol go hand-in-hand. A problem with one quickly becomes a problem with the other. Similarly, correcting one also corrects the other, so you have a win-win! Grains and beans are an excellent source of fiber, as are nuts, most fruits, and most vegetables. Sweet potatoes (yum!) and apples contain an especially soft type of fiber that is easy on the digestive tract. Consider including at least 30 grams per day in your food intake.

Nuts: Diabetic Superfood

Nuts are an excellent source of fiber and magnesium, which are essential to those with diabetes -- and the rest of us, too. Nuts contain healthy fats that are good for the body and help slow the digestion of carbohydrates, leading to a lowering of blood sugar. Omega-3 fatty acids are found in some nuts, including walnuts.

Note that the FDA recently went after the 100-year-old Blue Diamond Growers of California, for stating -- quite accurately -- that walnuts contain omega-3s and are therefore good for you. The FDA threatened the company with asset seizure and lawsuits if they didn't retract their references to research studies proving this to be true. It seems the FDA would rather you take expensive and potentially dangerous anti-diabetic medications produced by "Big Pharma" instead of just eating your walnuts. Which would you rather do?

Protein

Some protein at each meal will help slow the release of blood sugar. However, protein from meat is much harder on your system. Make sure that no more than one quarter of each meal come from protein foods. The rest should be made up of vegetables, fruits and other natural foods. When you start correcting your diet, the symptoms of type-2 diabetes can be mitigated or avoided. Your diabetes can even be cured outright. No medications; no injections.

Think about it.

Medical Disclaimer: The information on this website is not intended to replace a one-on-one relationship with a qualified, licensed health care professional and is not intended as medical advice. Filmed at the Tree of Life Rejuvenation Center in Patagonia, AZ, the documentary Raw in 30 Days shows the trials and successes of a group of everyday Americans who experience the healing results of 30 days of raw, living foods. You can watch these real people go through a fascinating transformation that revolutionizes their health.

This is not a once-only study. This is for real. There is a cure for diabetes, and it has nothing to do with prescription medications or hypodermic needles. Even though the American Diabetes Association has said, publicly and repeatedly, that there is no cure for diabetes -- that it is a life-long condition -- that's a fact that only serves the makers of Western medications.

In this video, you'll see a variety of people with very high fasting blood-sugar levels. Yet, in one month on a living foods diet, many saw their blood-sugar return to normal, healthy levels. They no longer needed medication. They were cured of type-2 diabetes through their own inner healing potential and natural healing foods.

Featuring supporting interviews with Tony Robbins, Morgan Spurlock, David Wolfe, Woody Harrelson, Rev. Michael Beckwith, Dr. Gabriel Cousens, Dr. Joel Fuhrman, Bruce Lipton, Mike Adams, Gary Null, Dr. Julian Whitaker and many others, this documentary (and its companion DVD) offers a wealth of enlightening -- and sometimes surprising -- information about the seemingly miraculous healing effects of a raw living foods diet.

This film can change your life because it will open your eyes to a whole new universe of possibilities you may not have known existed. Mainstream consumers are stuck in a very narrow way of thinking, and they believe that somehow the American Diabetes Association or some other non-profit group will one day invent a chemical cure for their diabetes that still allows them to eat all the processed junk food they want (and drink all the sodas they want). But, unfortunately, that's never going to happen.

The cure for diabetes will not come from an injection or a pharmaceutical. It simply isn't possible. But curing diabetes by consuming raw, living foods really works and you can start doing it right now!
